Back on Track – Top Tips for Managing Low Back Pain

Low back pain is the most costly musculoskeletal issue for our healthcare system. Check out these top tips for managing low back pain.

Anatomy 101

The spine is made up of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. These vertebrae are held together by a series of ligaments and fibrous tissues which form  facet joints. A facet joint is an articular surface of two vertebrae and moves by gliding between these surfaces. These joints are supported by muscles which work together to move and stabilise the lumbar spine.

What structures are causing my low back pain?

Let’s explore some of the culprits behind your back pain:

  1. Facet or (zygaphoseal) joints
  2. Intervertebral discs
  3. Erector spinae muscles
  4. Quadratus lumborum muscle

Of course there are many forms of back pain including nerve-related back pain, sacroiliac (pelvic) related back pain or perhaps very occasionally, something more sinister.

What should I do if I injure my back?

There are many methods to treat lower back pain, however the truth is there isn’t really one and only correct way!

Each case of low back pain requires a thorough subjective and objective examination which allows the treating therapist to identify the source of your pain. Treatment includes a combination of manual therapy techniques and exercise prescription targeting the specific symptoms and goals of the patient. Additionally, the physio will then provide a comprehensive treatment plan to restore movement and train vital core muscles and provide you with a graded return to your favourite activity or exercise.

What if physio doesn’t help?

If necessary, your physio will refer you on to the appropriate people whether it be your G.P or a local sports doctor. Additionally, your physiotherapist will be able to refer for imaging if appropriate.
